Field on Horizon for Fall 2013
With a convincing mandate from the mid-November referendum, the Haldane Central School District is moving ahead with plans to construct a new athletic facility in place of the existing football field on Route 9D in Cold Spring.
School board trustee Jon Champlin has co-chaired the ad hoc committee on fields and is at the center of the PLAY Haldane fundraising efforts that will help fund the multi-million dollar project.
The PCN&R spoke with Champlin for an update on 2013 activity.
Logistically, “We plan to have the final specs to NYSED (NY State Education Dept) the first week in January and get them approved (so we can get State Aid) by March/April. Then bids will go out for contractors, which will be awarded in May with construction to start in June and be done in September,” Champlin said.
As for the fundraising piece of the project, “We have $40,000 in the bank with another $22,000 pledged [out of a $100,000 goal] along with several other grants/potential donations that we are working.” Fundraising initiatives include a letter writing campaign for all students, grades k-through-12, a cash raffle, and selling engraved bricks/tiles. “We need to get to $100,000 to get the basics of the field and auditorium done and would like to get to $150,000 so we can do the concession/restroom/storage/ press box building at the same time as the field,” Champlin said.
As for the sale of the socalled James Pond Property, Superintendent Dr. Mark Villanti told the PCN&R that there are no updates at this point. The property has been advertised, and the district will look at any inquiries and/or offers.
Champlin noted “We are building an email list of all Haldane alumni (we currently are targeting back to the class of ‘60 but will take any alumni)” so if there are any alumni readers who would like to be included, “I’d encourage them to send me an email (email@example.com) with the following information: year of Graduation, name at the time of graduation, and email address.”
