The Gold Ball is back in Cold Spring!

Last year, it was 6’ 7” Diane Fiacco accepting the trophy for North Salem as her Tiger team edged the Blue Devils 37-32. This year, no one was bigger than tournament MVP Liz Milner, whose 17 points and 10 rebounds propelled the Blue Devils to a 44-29 over Hamilton. It is the school’s 20th sectional championship in 23 years.

The big question entering the day was how Haldane would react to their 18 day hiatus. Though the team scrimmaged the likes of Peekskill, Briarcliff and Mount Vernon (all sectional finalists themselves) over the past week, the Blue Devils had not played a meaningful game since a 59-37 rout of Dover on February 15. Milner answered that question hitting a turnaround jumper to open the scoring and then, after Hamilton had evened it up on a basket by Maia Hood (15 points), banking in a three pointer to give the Blue Devils a lead they would never relinquish. The moment also seemed to allow the team loosen up and settle into the game. Milner chuckled as she back pedaled down the floor after making the important three—a sheepish admission that she probably didn’t call the bank.

The Haldane Varrsity Boys hoopsters had their own Sectional Final match at the Westchester County Center on Saturday, but came up short in a heartbreaking loss to Tuckahoe.
